Nurturing a Team to Success

We all know that happy employees perform better, stay with your company longer, and overall, contribute more to your business. So, since we already know this to be a fact, why is it that the majority of employees globally are still unhappy with their jobs?

One unhappy employee can spread like a virus causing a downward spiral in your company.

In a survey by Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index®, research states that Americans are increasingly unhappy in their work environment and with their job overall. What happens when people are not happy?  The employee becomes disengaged, the quality of work suffers, their workplaces are less safe, they produce less, the produce more quality defects and they don’t show up consistently.

How can employee engagement be measured???  The Gallop poll used the following 12 statements to measure employee engagement:

  1. I know what is expected of me at work.
  2. I have the material and equipment I need to do my work right.
  3. At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.
  4. In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work.
  5. My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person.
  6. There is someone at work who encourages my development.
  7. At work, my opinions seem to count.
  8. The mission or purpose of my company makes me feel my job is important.
  9. My associates or fellow employees are committed to doing quality work.
  10. I have a best friend at work.
  11. In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress.
  12. This last year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and grow.

So lets look at these one by one to see if you are measuring up….

1. I know what is expected of me at work.

You have policies and procedures in place so that the employee has a clear understanding of expectations.  These policies and procedures are clear, concise and consistent through departments.  It should reflect a mission that resonates with the entire team.

2. I have the material and equipment I need to do my work right.

All of your systems, computers, etc. are up to date and function so that your office staff is able to complete the job.  Every detail is watched, right down to never running out of staples.  Your field workers are fully stocked with everything they need to complete any job on any given day.

3. At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.

Give your employees the chance to shine.  Ensure that you are matching employee strengths with the job that you are requiring of them. Every part of the team has a purpose and a goal.

4. In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work.

This can be as easy as a high five, a pat on the back, or a simple thank-you.  Showing appreciation for a job well done truly warms the heart and makes the team or employee feel valued.

5. My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person.

You don’t have to get overly personal here in order to show that you care about a person.  If the employee is engaged, and encouraged, they will naturally feel like you care about them and their work.  Which you should.  You need to care about your employees, while your clients are the lifeblood of your company, your employees are the veins that carry the blood.  They are a reflection of you and your brand, and must be treated with care and respect.

6. There is someone at work who encourages my development.

Every employee wants to grow and be nurtured.  Development in the form of constructive criticism, matched with positive reinforcement is psychologically proven to invoke a sense of pride and accomplishment in ones’ work.  When this happens, an employee will naturally have positive development.

7. At work, my opinions seem to count.

We all want to be heard.  Everyone has ideas that they want to share.  When you work as a team these options need to be recognized, and better yet asked for.  It turns “just a job” into a sense of belonging.

8. The mission or purpose of my company makes me feel my job is important.

In any company, small or large, it is critical that each and every employee knows that they are a tremendous asset to the company.  There is not one part that we can do without it.  It’s like the salt in baking.  You only use a pinch, but without it your bread turns flat.

9. My associates or fellow employees are committed to doing quality work.

Your team has a clear and concise mission.  There are policies in place for type and scope of work to be performed, and each and every member of your team are committed to performing top quality work.

10. I have a best friend at work.

I don’t so much agree with this one, I think it should be phrased something more like:  I enjoy my co-workers company.  Do your employees joke around, laugh, share stories about their weekends?  I do not believe it is necessary that they are your bestie, but hey, it goes a long way when there is a common thread.

11. In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress.

No one likes stagnant waters.  It’s where mosquitoes breed.  Fostering growth and progress in your employees is as simple as having a discussion about the overall business climate, and how they have been part of this and will continue to be a part of it.  Define clear and specific goals for growth and improvement, and of course, recognize achievements.

12. This last year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and grow.

This goes hand and hand with progress and improvement.  Giving an employee the opportunity to grow and progress is a key factor in employee happiness as well as employee retention.

What this really all boils down to is communication.  Communicate with your team, be sure to start conversations, not just engage in a monolog.  A team that is cohesive and collaborative will grow to be successful.
