To Blog or Not to Blog That is the Question

So I have working on putting together an e-course about whether or not you should blog, but I got stuck.  I have everything organized in a clear and concise fashion.  I have resources all laid out, but the words just would not flow.  And then it hit me.  That really is what this is all about.

In general, if you give me a topic I can knock a post out in a couple of days from start to finish.  Sometimes all I need is a title or a phrase to get me started.  Other times, I do piles of research, and the content takes me weeks to put together in a coherent post.  I want my content to be useful, relevant, as well as enjoyable to read.  Sometimes this is a struggle, and that is all there is to it.

So let me get to the point.  Let’s see if creating a blog, or alternatively resources pages is something that you want to dive into.

I want you to ask yourself these questions:

  • Can you come out with 25 topics in which you can easily write about?  They don’t have to be vastly different, in fact, they should have a common element.  Your blog itself needs to have direction.
  • Who is your audience?
  • What does your audience want to read, or learn?
  • How does this relate to your business?
  • Do you have the time and resources to commit to posting on a regular and consistent basis?

So that’s a good start.  If you feel confident about your answers to these questions then you have probably already made your decision about whether or not you should start a blog.  If you are still on the fence then let’s consider a few reasons that blogging can be a powerful tool for growth.

  • Your blog can increase your search engine optimization (SEO).  SEO changes all the time, and I am not expert, but what I do know is that creating great content consistently, increases your chances of being found online.
  • You get to be helpful.  I really like to be helpful.  It is in my nature, my grandmother put me to “work” from a very young age, and I have always loved it.  Now I like to share my knowledge and help people solve problems.  I love to find solutions to questions both big and small.
  • It gives you something to share on social media…yup I repost, tweet, retweet other people’s content constantly.  This is what social media is all about, but sharing your own content…there is somehow a sense of pride in it.
  • You get to market your brand.  While blogging is more about being helpful than marketing, you will get to brand the blog, and therefore, become more visible to the public eye.
  • Blogging keeps you on your toes.  It gives you a chance to broaden your knowledge base, and expand your horizons.  It is also a great creative outlet.  Finishing each post always give me a sense of accomplishment.

Here are a couple folks in the cleaning industry whom I personally think have got this whole blog thing down.

Clean Freak is a janitorial supply and equipment company.  They blog about cleaning, but they break it down into four categories, and stick to those areas. 

  • The News – Highlights the latest news about cleaning.
  • The Clean – Tips and trick about cleaning.
  • The Goods – Information about cleaning products and equipment.
  • The Life – Real life scenarios and stories about cleaning.

College Girl Cleaning Service is a residential maid service company.  They write posts on a regular basis about how to clean, as well as things to watch out for when hiring a maid service.  They have a nice mix of being helpful, with a little marketing mixed in.

Clean Mama is a blog about organizing and cleaning.  When it comes to resource pages, this is hands down one of my favorites.  The first time I came across this site, it made me drool a little.  I have used her chore charts with my own kiddos, and it really helps them get motivated and help out.
